Walk down from the Parliament to the river wall and you find worn-out shoes scattered on the stone: work boots, heels, a child's pair. All of it is cast iron. Film director Can Togay and sculptor Gyula Pauer made it in 2005 for the Jews shot into the Danube here by the Arrow Cross in the winter of 1944-45. The plaques are small and the text short, which is why people stand a while. Fresh flowers and candles inside the shoes show someone was just here.
