Mies van der Rohe's glass box on a stone plinth

A flat black steel roof floats on eight slim columns, and the whole upper hall is plate glass. Mies van der Rohe finished it in 1968 and it reopened in 2021 after a long renovation. The glass hall is nearly empty on purpose; the permanent collection of Kirchner, Grosz, Beckmann and other 20th-century German painters sits downstairs in the basement. Sculpture stands on the terrace outside.
