Address
The monastery area halfway up Montserrat mountain; about 1.5 hours from Plaça d'Espanya by train plus rack railway or cable car

From the train window grey rock fingers start rising one after another, and then a rack railway hauls you halfway up the cliffs. On the monastery square you have a wall of rock behind you and a long drop into the valley in front. Above the altar of the basilica sits La Moreneta, the Black Madonna, and visitors queue to lay a hand on her as they file past. Below the square, farm stalls sell tasting cups of soft goat's cheese drowned in honey, and the Sant Joan funicular climbs to trails along the higher ridges.
