The temple clings to the edge of a limestone cliff nearly 70 metres above the Indian Ocean. The inner courtyards open only for ceremonies, so the visit is really the clifftop path, looking down at the drop and the surf. Around sunset a Kecak dance is staged in an open-air amphitheatre on the cliff: dozens of men sit in rings and supply the whole soundtrack with a rhythmic 'cak-cak-cak', while the Ramayana plays out and the monkey general Hanuman ends up dancing through fire. The 6pm show lines up with the sun going down behind the stage, so it sells out first.
