This is the city's navel: tram bells, pigeons, street performers. On one side stands the white obelisk of the National Monument; facing it, the Royal Palace, built as a town hall in the 1600s, its sandstone gone dark with age. The outside is stern, but step into the Citizens' Hall and the whole room soars white to the ceiling, with maps of the world inlaid in marble at your feet. An audio tour comes with the ticket.
