The building reopened in 2023 with a boxy exhibition floor that seems to float on top. The permanent show, 'Wien. Meine Geschichte', runs over three floors and 1,700 objects, tracing the city's growth, and it's free. Medieval statues from St Stephen's, paintings by Klimt and Schiele and ordinary Viennese households' belongings sit on one route. From the upper level the Karlskirche dome is right at eye level.
