Hallstatt day trip

Hallstatt (Salzkammergut)

The postcard lake village, as a day tour from Vienna

⚠ Bring cash for the ferry

Hours
Village any time; salt mine and funicular are seasonal (check the official site)
Tickets
Village free. Ferry about €4 one way (cash). Salt mine tour with funicular €49 adults (Aug 2026)
Address
About 290 km west of Vienna on Lake Hallstatt; the train station is across the lake

From the station across the lake, a little ferry takes ten minutes, and the steepled church and wooden houses under the mountain slide toward you over the water. The village is small enough to walk in half a day: the market square, the lakeside photo point and the bone house. The salt mine reopened on 28 August 2026 after a year's closure, with a new funicular up to the Skywalk viewpoint. From Vienna it's 7–8 hours round trip, so many visitors book a van tour that adds Salzburg.
