Tintoretto worked on this one building for some twenty years from 1564. The great upper hall has a ceiling crammed edge to edge with Bible scenes, and mirrors are on hand so you can look without wrecking your neck. The lower hall is darker and more theatrical, figures leaping out of the shadows when the light catches them. No other place packs so much Venetian painting into one spot, which is why people keep comparing it to the Sistine.
