Built in 1986 by craftsmen from Suzhou using traditional joinery, this is a Ming-style scholar's garden. Step inside the white walls and the traffic noise drops; tiled pavilions and pitted Taihu rocks reflect in a jade-green pond. Every window is cut to frame a different little scene, which is the whole idea. Afterwards, walk Chinatown's Millennium Gate and its old bakeries and herbal shops for another hour.
