The Skyride gondola base at the top of Nancy Greene Way, North Vancouver

Thirty minutes from Downtown you're standing on a mountain over 1,100 metres up. The red Skyride gondola lifts over the forest and the city, Stanley Park and the sea open up behind you, with the mountains of Vancouver Island beyond. Up top there's a refuge for two grizzlies, a lumberjack show and ziplines, and in winter the whole thing turns into a ski hill. Locals climb the brutal Grouse Grind trail and ride the gondola down.
