Eight stacked segments, like joints of bamboo, make up this 508 m tower. The lift gets you to the indoor deck on the 89th floor in 37 seconds, barely time for your ears to pop, and from the windows you look down on Xinyi's tidy grid all the way to the mouth of the Tamsui River. The real star hangs between floors 87 and 92: a golden steel ball about 5 m across, the 660-tonne damper that steadies the building in typhoons and earthquakes. On clear days the 91st-floor outdoor deck opens, and a pricier ticket takes you up to 101. Most people go up an hour before sunset and stay for the lights.
