A handful of single-storey homes built for soldiers' families who crossed to Taiwan after the civil war. When demolition loomed, one of the last residents, veteran Huang Yung-fu, began painting birds, cats and faces over the walls, doors and even the pavement in loud primary colours, and the attention saved the place. It is only a few short lanes, so 30 to 40 minutes covers it. In 2022 some murals were painted over by vandals; the city closed the village for ten months of repairs before reopening, which is why a few walls now look different from older photos.
