The Stockton dunes run more than 30 km along the coast, some over 30 m high; it feels like desert. You swap the coach for a 4WD, ride into the dunes and slide down on a board, and nearly every review says the climb back up is the hard part. At Nelson Bay a boat heads out after wild dolphins, and some cruises drop a boom net off the back for a dip. Day tours usually add kangaroo feeding at Oakvale farm and a winery lunch to fill the day.
