A converted bumboat, the old river cargo boat, leaves Clarke Quay, slides past Boat Quay's low shophouses and the Fullerton Hotel, loops out into Marina Bay and comes back. For about 40 minutes you sit and watch the Merlion head-on, the spiky durian-like roof of the Esplanade and Marina Bay Sands. One lap instead of a hot walk and the city map clicks into place, which is why many say to do it on your first evening. Step off and you're among Clarke Quay's riverside bars and restaurants.
