Step out of the station and the first thing you get is jasmine garland stalls and the smell of spices. Gold shops and sari stores line Serangoon Road, and halfway along, the gateway tower of Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple, dedicated to the goddess Kali, is stacked with carved deities. Near the station, the House of Tan Teng Niah is a brightly painted two-storey Chinese villa that everyone photographs. The finish line is Mustafa Centre, open 24 hours, where visitors load up on kaya jam, TWG tea and chocolate in one go.
