One block off the main road the traffic noise drops out, and the wat sits at the end of a residential street with monks' quarters around it. Inside the old vihara, faded scenes from the Reamker, the Khmer Ramayana, run along the walls, usually dated to the late 19th century. Scholars link the figures to shadow-puppet cutouts, which gives the walls the feel of a stage. Kids kick a ball in the yard and dogs sleep in the shade. Half an hour is plenty.
