Grey-brick shikumen houses banded in red brick have been restored to a polish, and every other doorway is now a flagship store or a pop-up. In the 1880s this was Zhang Garden, the city's grandest pleasure ground and one of the first places in China to screen a film. Lane houses replaced it from 1918, and the west zone reopened in 2022 after a renewal that knocked nothing down. Look up and the carved stone arches and gables are stacked against glass towers. Come at dusk when the lanes light up.
