A tiny pizza counter in North Beach, the old Italian quarter, open since 1978; instead of round pies it sells squares cut from big pans, with a thick, chewy focaccia-like base and plenty of cheese. The local favourite is the Clam & Garlic, heaped with clams and garlic. Slices run $4-5, so it's an easy solo stop. There's barely anywhere to sit, so people eat on the street or in nearby Washington Square park, which is even better at night.
