Pass under the green-tiled Dragon Gate and red lanterns string out above Grant Avenue, lined with souvenir shops, tea shops and bakeries. Dating from the late 1840s, it's the oldest Chinatown in North America, and pagoda roofs cap many of the buildings. One block over on Stockton Street the mood shifts to fishmongers and grocers where locals do their shopping. In narrow Ross Alley a tiny factory still folds and bakes fortune cookies by hand.
