Right beside Garapan's hotels is a big park of lawns, mangroves and shoreline. Run by the US National Park Service, it honours those who died in the 1944 battles for Saipan and Tinian and the Battle of the Philippine Sea. The visitor center lays out how the battle unfolded, with exhibits and a short film, and outside a memorial court holds granite walls of names and a carillon tower. Walk the shore path to Micro Beach at dusk and you get the history and the sunset together.
