Romans mock the vast white marble monument as the typewriter. The front steps and the middle terraces are free, and a glass lift whisks you up to the top terrace in about 30 seconds. Up there the Colosseum lies beyond the Roman Forum on one side, and St Peter's dome and the old-town rooftops on the other, all the way round. It sits right in the middle of the city, so it slots easily into a day, and many time it for sunset.
