It is just a few columns and heaps of brick, yet it is hard to leave. Walk in under the Arch of Titus and the Senate house, temple columns and the spot where Caesar was cremated line up along one road. Climb to the Palatine and the ruins of imperial palaces spread out, and from the terrace at the end of the Farnese Gardens the whole Forum lies below like a map. Go in cold and it is a field of stones, so many people add an audio guide or a tour.
