Down the church steps the air goes quiet. Skulls, ribs and pelvises are arranged on the walls and ceilings of five small chapels like floral patterns, and skeletons in brown habits stand in niches. It feels less frightening than oddly tender. The path is single file and quick, but with the museum an hour is comfortable. A good pause after the crowds at the Colosseum.
