A compact museum right on Arrowtown's main street, packed room by room with miners' tools, old photographs and household objects from the gold years. You can see it in about an hour, and gold pans can be hired at the desk to try the river yourself. Stop in before the Chinese Settlement and the huts there make a lot more sense.
