Quiet hillside temple behind the beach crowds

No. 2 Zhiquan Road, Shinan, on the foot of the hill

Ten minutes inland from the beaches and beer streets, incense smoke hangs low over a temple climbing the hillside in tiers. From the upper steps, the city roofs show between the trees. It is younger than China's famous old temples, which is partly why it stays calm. On the 1st and 15th of the lunar month it fills with people lighting incense and the mood changes.
