Address
Badaguan Scenic Area, Shinan; Huashilou, the villa linked to Chiang Kai-shek, is at 18 Huanghai Road

Built as a 1930s villa quarter, Badaguan is laid out along eight roads named after old Chinese passes, with German, Russian and Spanish-style houses peeking over the walls one after another. Each road has its own street trees, so it's cherry blossom in spring and gold ginkgo in autumn. There's hardly any traffic, and the lanes suddenly open onto the sea at No.2 Beach. Huashilou, a stone mini-castle said to have been Chiang Kai-shek's villa, is open inside. Expect to dodge a few wedding shoots.
