Port is made up in the Douro Valley, but it came down the river to age in warehouses on this Gaia hillside, which is why Taylor's, Graham's, Sandeman, Cálem and the rest still line the slope behind the quay. Step inside and the air turns cool, with casks stacked several storeys high and a sweet woody smell. Taylor's, one of the most popular, is a self-guided audio tour ending with three glasses: Chip Dry white, an LBV and a 10-year-old tawny, followed by the garden terrace with its wandering peacocks and the view back over Porto.
