When 19th-century tin mining brought money pouring in, Chinese merchants built the Sino-Portuguese shophouses that still line Thalang Road. Mint, pink and yellow facades run over arched arcades, and the ground floors hold cafés, rattan shops and old noodle counters. The colours look best when the afternoon light comes in low, and narrow Soi Romanee is the photo lane. On Sundays from about 4pm to 10pm Thalang Road turns car-free for the Lard Yai walking street: skewers, mango sticky rice and buskers end to end.
