The 3 km beach along Thaweewong (Beach) Road, Patong, Kathu district

Three kilometres of sand curve round the bay under an endless run of umbrellas and loungers, with long-tail boats and parasail canopies out on the water. Cross the road and it's hotels, massage shops, restaurants and Jungceylon mall, so you can flip-flop down from your room. At dusk the sun sets over the bay and the sand fills with strollers before everyone drifts off to Bangla Road. Come for peace and quiet and you'll be disappointed; its real selling point is that everything is within walking distance.
