Climb onto a battered two-deck ferry at Bali Hai, rock along for 40-odd minutes, and the murky green of Pattaya Bay slowly turns pale jade. Tawaen, the beach most people head for, is rows of umbrellas and deckchairs with a constant patter of banana-boat and parasail touts. For something calmer, cross to Samae Beach on the southwest side: a wider strip of sand, fewer people, and a good spot for sunset. The island roads are narrow and steep, so most visitors hop between beaches by baht bus or motorbike taxi.
