Kushikatsu signs jut out over every alley below the tower, with smart-ball parlours and shooting galleries wedged in between. Tsutenkaku itself is the second tower on the spot, 108 metres of steel rebuilt in 1956 with money raised by locals and designed by Naito Tachu, the man behind Tokyo Tower. Up on the deck the Billiken figure waits for you to rub his feet for luck. If Dotonbori is neon, Shinsekai is gloriously tacky, and it tends to win over people on their second trip to Osaka.
