Walk down the stone road from Shuri Castle and you come to a courtyard hemmed in by high walls. King Sho Shin built this royal tomb in 1501 for his father, and three roof-shaped chambers of coral stone stand side by side. The middle one is where remains were laid before being cleaned, and the two flanking rooms hold the bones. Even when tour groups come through, the courtyard stays oddly quiet, and the staff explanation makes the layout easy to read.
