Past the incense-heavy main hall, steps climb the hill behind: halfway up lies a marble reclining Buddha, and at the top a 24-metre white Buddha sits on a lotus. Built in 1963, it looks out over red-tiled roofs to the city and the hotel towers along the beach. It's about 150 steps, enough to work up a sweat, with the temple bell and chanting following you up. The cathedral is five minutes away by car, so most people do both together.
