Leave Nha Trang and climb the switchbacks of the Khanh Le pass, and the air turns cool while palms give way to pines. At around 1,500 metres, Da Lat was built by the French as a hill station, so European-style villas and an old railway station still ring the lake, and greenhouse flower farms glint on every hillside. The standard day: a walk round Xuan Huong Lake, the Crazy House and the old station, then grilled rice-paper 'pizza' at the night market. But with 7–8 hours of driving in a round trip, staying a night is much the better plan.
