The side streets west of Times Square are lined with old theatre marquees, and around 7pm queues form outside every one. For a first show, Wicked, The Lion King or Aladdin are safe bets, where staging and music carry you even without much English. Tickets come full price, discounted on the day at the TKTS booth under the red steps, or through app lotteries and rush deals. After 10pm the doors open all at once and the street fills with audiences.
