The keep, with its two golden shachihoko fish on the roof, has been closed since May 2018 while the city plans to replace the quake-prone 1959 concrete tower with a wooden rebuild, and as of October 2026 there is no announced reopening date. Come anyway. The Hommaru Palace, rebuilt and finished in 2018, is the reason: shoes off, and room after room of gold-leaf sliding doors painted with tigers and plum blossoms. Add the view of the keep from below, the massive stone walls and the Ninomaru Garden, and an hour or two goes quickly.
