- Palazzo di Brera, Via Brera 28; climb the stairs behind the Napoleon statue in the courtyard
The palace is shared with an art academy, so students with portfolio tubes cut across the courtyard past a nude bronze Napoleon. Upstairs the gallery runs through a long chain of rooms with one famous picture after another: Mantegna's Dead Christ, seen feet-first; Raphael's Marriage of the Virgin; Caravaggio's Supper at Emmaus; and Hayez's The Kiss. Halfway round, a glass-walled restoration lab lets you watch conservators at work.
