Bergamo Città Alta

Città Alta di Bergamo · Piazza Vecchia

A hilltop town inside Venetian walls, reached by funicular

Hours
Town always open; church and chapel hours on site
Tickets
Train Milan–Bergamo about €6 one way (per guides; check Trenord); funicular on an ATB ticket
Address
From Bergamo station take a bus to the lower funicular station on Viale Vittorio Emanuele II, then ride up into the walled upper town

The funicular hauls you up the hill, the doors open, and you're in a medieval town of narrow stone streets and old shopfronts. A few minutes on is Piazza Vecchia, a fountain between the arcaded Palazzo della Ragione and its bell tower, with the patterned marble of the Colleoni Chapel and Santa Maria Maggiore just behind. Walk the Venetian walls (UNESCO-listed) that ring the town for big views over the lower city and the plain.
