Thirty minutes on the tram from the city and you're on a palm-lined beach promenade. Spend the afternoon on the sand and window-shopping the cake shops on Acland Street, then walk out along the pier as the sun drops. The rock breakwater at the end is home to over a thousand little penguins, and after dark they waddle up from the water into the gaps between the rocks. The viewing platform built in late 2024 is free but now ticketed, so book before you go.
