The black steam engine whistles, pulls out, and everyone perches on the window ledges with legs dangling outside. Tall mountain ash and tree ferns brush past, and as you cross the timber Monbulk Creek trestle bridge people below wave up with cameras. The usual plan is to ride to Lakeside, have lunch by the lake, then head back. With time to spare, stop at a tea room in the hill villages like Sassafras for scones on the way down.
