This is the NGV's gallery of Australian art, tucked inside Federation Square. Art by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists is a big part of the collection, with colonial landscape painting and modern and contemporary work stacked across the floors. The permanent collection is free, so you can pop in for one floor and leave without guilt. Special exhibitions charge separately. It is a good rainy-day plan, one step from the square.
