Built under the Almohads in the 12th century, its 77 m minaret is visible from almost anywhere in Marrakech, which makes it your landmark when lost; there's a well-known rule that nothing in town may stand taller. Non-Muslims can't go inside, so walk around it and rest on a bench in the rose garden behind. Next to it lie the foundations of the first mosque, rebuilt because it wasn't aligned properly with Mecca. Best moment: sunset, when the call to prayer rolls out over the noise of the square.
