The park sits on the spot where José Rizal was executed in 1896. At the bay end, his monument holds his remains and an honour guard stands motionless in front. Walk inland and you pass a life-size statue group re-enacting the execution, a relief map of the archipelago laid out on a pond, and Chinese and Japanese gardens. Around sunset families spread mats on the grass and ice-cream carts ring their bells, and in the evening the musical fountain comes on.
