On Plaza Miranda beside Quezon Boulevard, Quiapo

The market starts on Plaza Miranda, well before the church door: candles, rosaries, bundles of herbs, lottery tickets and fortune tellers crowd right up to the entrance. Inside is the Black Nazarene, a dark wooden statue of Christ, and even on weekdays a long line climbs behind the altar to touch its feet and pray. It's common to see devotees making their way down the aisle on their knees. The present building went up after a fire in 1929 and was finished in 1935. It's less a tourist sight than a direct look at how Manila prays.
