Address
A tadpole-shaped island at the mouth of Manila Bay, reached by ferry

This small island plugs the mouth of Manila Bay. In 1942 American and Filipino troops held out here against the Japanese to the very end, and the whole island is a war site. You go round on a tour bus styled like the old island tramcars: the Mile-Long Barracks, roofless and down to bare concrete and rebar; gun batteries with rusting cannon still aimed at the sky; and the Pacific War Memorial, where a single shaft of sunlight falls through the dome. Inside Malinta Tunnel it's cool and dark, which makes the light-and-sound show about the siege all the more vivid.
