Work began in 1656 and finished in 1658, using blocks of coral stone cut from the reef and fitted together. The outer walls are densely carved with Arabic script and patterns, and the interior is known for woodcarving and lacquered ceilings by Maldivian craftsmen. The round blue-and-white minaret next to it dates from 1675. The graveyard is full of carved coral headstones: pointed tops mark men, rounded ones women. It went onto UNESCO's tentative World Heritage list in 2008.
