Address
The Roman aqueduct at Plaza del Azoguejo, the gateway to the old town; the Alcázar is at its western tip

Walk from the bus into Plaza del Azoguejo and the Roman aqueduct sweeps across the sky in two tiers of granite arches. It's held together by nothing but the weight of the stones and has stood for close to 2,000 years; standing under the arches and looking up is dizzying. Climb the steps beside it into the old town to reach the honey-coloured Gothic cathedral, nicknamed the Lady of Cathedrals, and at the end of the street the Alcázar perches on a cliff like a ship's prow, its towers capped with slate-blue spires. Lunch is the local speciality, roast suckling pig (cochinillo asado).
