Red brick, horseshoe arches and tile panels: the facade is Neo-Mudéjar, opened in 1931. The tour starts with an audio guide on the sand of the ring itself, looking up at stands for more than 20,000 people. Then it follows the backstage route, past the small chapel where matadors pray, the gate the bulls come through and the infirmary. A bullfighting museum holds the suits of lights, posters and personal items of famous matadors. Whatever you think of bullfighting, the building is one of Madrid’s faces and worth stepping into once.
