Gran Vía was punched through the old lanes a century ago, and it's lined with bank buildings, theatres and department stores; at night the musical marquees and the Schweppes neon on Plaza del Callao light up. The best seat over its eastern end is the roof of the Círculo de Bellas Artes, an arts centre. Step out of the lift and the Metrópolis building's dome, topped by a winged Victory, is right in front of you, with Gran Vía running away to the west behind it. Overhead, a statue of Minerva keeps watch from the top of the building.
