Work on the church began in 1602, and a fire in 1835 left only the stone front wall and the staircase. With nothing behind it, the façade stands against the sky like a stage set when you look up from the bottom step. Carved into it are the Virgin, Jesuit emblems, a sailing ship and lines of Chinese script, East and West sharing one wall. Walk round the back and the old church floor, a crypt and a small Museum of Sacred Art are open for free.
